Jensen has been asked to step into the shoes, car and face-hiding mask of a driver who goes by the nickname of Frankenstein and whose death in the last race has been hushed up by Hennessey in hopes of generating higher ratings. Jensen, like Steve McQueen in Bullitt, drives a late-model Ford Mustang, albeit one with more firepower. On the opposite side of the ledger are the rival drivers, including Pachenko (Max Ryan), driving a heavily armoured Buick Riviera, and Machine Gun Joe (Tyrese Gibson), whose choice of ride, a modified 2004 Dodge Ram 1500, is clearly compensating for something. Equally helpful to him, if not as easy on the eyes, are his pit crew, played by Frederick Koehler, Ian McShane and Jacob Vargas. Jensen's navigatrix is Case, played by model-turned-actress Natalie Martinez. Helping both causes, the all-male crew of prisoner/drivers are paired with female prisoner/navigators, all of whom have clearly been incarcerated for being criminally hot and given five years of hard hair-tossing and chest-heaving. The combative events held at Terminal Island are broadcast to a pay-per-view audience and bring in millions of dollars coincidentally, this is pretty much the business case of the movie, as well. As to Death Race's other charms, well, if you like things that go boom-boom, vroom-vroom and va-voom, you'll be in testosterone heaven. Waiting to witness her character's comeuppance is the film's sweetest tease. She's constantly followed, at leash distance, by Ulrich (Jason Clarke), her chief lackey and the one who Tasers or pistol-whips anyone at whom she deigns to raise an eyebrow. Stalking through the corridors and yards of her prison in severe, just-shy-of-dominatrix suits, she clearly gets a kick out of riding roughshod over the male inmates. The warden, played by Joan Allen, is named Hennessey and - there's no polite way to frame this - she's a bitch. In Death Race, he is Jensen Ames, named after a '60s British sports car, the Jensen Interceptor.

Statham's own occupational history clearly helped him win this role: He has played fast drivers (in The Transporter, The Italian Job and their sequels), a dodgy used-car salesman (in The Bank Job) and a man whose name sounds like a car (Crank's Chev Chelios). After Statham's character is mysteriously framed for the murder of his wife, he finds himself a resident of Terminal Island, facing the chief warden, who informs him she has looked into his 'occupational history' and thinks he'd be a natural at death racing. And to think they just used to make licence plates. In one such institute, joyously named Terminal Island, inmates are pitted against one another in vehicles that carry enough firepower to turn any building into a drive-through. economy has collapsed, crime has skyrocketed and overcrowded prisons have been taken over by private corporations. The opening titles inform us that in 2012 the U.S. Lack of knowledge of the original, directed by Paul Bartel, is no problem because reports are that it bears as much resemblance to this one as a Hyundai to a Hummer. And I do mean 'driven.' This is a nominal remake of 1975's Death Race 2000, now just called Death Race because the '2000' suffix is so last-century. It's just Jason Statham, who stars as a man wronged by the system, framed for a crime he didn't commit, locked in a soulless penitentiary and driven to escape. And that's not even one of the cars in this violent automotive fantasy.
